The Best Cat Trees for Large Cats with Wide Top Beds

Giant cats outgrow basic towers. Most standard cat trees are sized for an average house cat, and once a heavy cat lies down on top, half her body hangs over the rim because the bed is simply too shallow. Small beds sit empty. For cats over 15 lb we look for a top bed at least 17.5 by 15 in, while Maine Coons or cats over 20 lb need 21.5 by 15.5 in with three to five posts directly underneath instead of one center pole.

How to Choose the Right Cat Trees for Large Cats

01

Does the top bed fit your cat's full length?

Long bodies need flat room. Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail while your cat is stretched out on the floor, since a 15 lb cat needs around 17.5 by 15 in and a 20 lb+ Maine Coon needs closer to 21.5 by 15.5 in. Check both numbers on the spec sheet so her back legs don't dangle over the edge.

Tight boxes get ignored. Many enclosed condos only let a big cat duck inside and curl into a tight ball, while a short side of 14.5 in or more lets her actually lie down flat. Not every brand lists interior condo dimensions, and our table only shows that number when both sides are published on the spec sheet.

Single poles wobble fast. Product titles often count every scratching post on the tree even when most sit near the floor and the highest bed balances on one center tube. Heavy jumpers hit the outer rim first and then step toward the middle, which is why every model here puts three, four, or five posts right under that top bed.

How We Pick

Spec sheets tell the truth. Our review checks four numbers across the product sheets and assembly manuals: both sides of the top bed, how many posts sit directly under that bed, the shorter side of the condo when it's listed, and the packed shipping weight in the carton. Boxed weight is only a rough clue to frame material rather than a weight rating. One model represents each height band so you can match the tree to your ceiling, and if no tree in a band clears both the bed and condo size, we leave that band blank.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cat Trees for Large Cats

Start with bed width. Every pick in our comparison table lists both sides of the top bed and the number of posts underneath so you can match your cat's weight first and pick the height for your room second.

Height alone doesn't mean a bigger bed. A 75 in tree can still have a cramped perch on top while a shorter tower carries a giant one, and our two largest beds here sit at 52.1 in (S52E) and 83 in (S83J).

An 18 lb cat fits right into our 15–20 lb group with the Z74, S62, or S78G. Long-framed Maine Coons or cats still growing past 20 lb do better on the 25.5 in beds of the S83J or S52E, and corner placements can check our Corner Cat Trees page.

They solve different problems. Large-cat picks focus on whether a big body fits on the bed and inside the condo, whereas our Heavy-Duty Cat Trees page filters by post count, base layout, and frame support for hard jumpers like the S83J and S62.
